Obituary for John Schmidt

John Schmidt
John Schmidt
November 9, 1927 – March 12, 2017
SCHMIDT, John 1927-2017 Passed peacefully on March 12, 2017 in his ninetieth year after a lengthy battle with cancer. Devoted husband of the late Anna Schmidt. Loving father of John, Fred and Rich Schmidt and father-in-law of Nancy, Susan, and Sherry Schmidt. Beloved Opa to his grandchildren Elyse, David, Erika, Kristina, Grace and Noelle.
John was born in the village of Ronok, Hungary. As a teenager, he was conscripted and fought in World War II, where he was wounded and spent time in a POW camp. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 and met his future wife Anna at a New Year's Eve dance in 1954. They married in 1955, raising three sons.
John worked for 27 years at General Motors in Oshawa to provide a secure home for his family. He loved the outdoors, taking the family on camping trips each summer to fish, pick blueberries and enjoy nature.
When Anna passed away suddenly in 1996, John spent much of his time woodworking, making intricate fretwork pieces, including cathedral clocks. Two of those clocks now are on display at the Canadian Clock Museum in Deep River, Ontario. During the last years of his life, John’s lively Boston Terrier Bobo was never far from his side.
Public visitation will take place at 11 a.m. and a memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, March 17 at Armstrong Funeral Home at 124 King Street East, Oshawa, ON L1H 1B6. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
